La Fete Nationale July 14, 2013

Today marks the French independence day. July 14, 1789 was the end of the French Revolution when the people stormed La Bastille. This morning we walked around to see where the night fireworks would be. Most of the shops were closed for the holiday. We saw some weird stuff in the shop windows...

There were crowds of people in the parks and near the Eiffel Tower. Police were everywhere directing the traffic.

On the way back to the apartment we stopped for lunch at a Chinese restaurant.
Maggie picked out our dessert at a neat little bakery. They were layering meringue and cocoa whipping cream, then pressing chocolate shavings on the side and top to create a meringue cakes.

They had trays and trays stacked with meringue.

It was delicious.

Back at the room, we rested and ate dinner. Then at 9pm we left to claim our spot for the fireworks. The police had blocked off sections of the road so we had to take a detour. Following the crowd down an alley with stairs, we came out near the Seine River. We found a spot on a bridge across from the Eiffel Tower and then waited. There were crowds of people sitting and walking past.
The Eiffel Tower was lit up prettily.
Before the firework show started, the tower lights sparkled on and off against the night sky.
The show started at 11 pm. The fireworks filled the sky above the river. The fireworks popped loudly while the crowd cheered.

They were red, green, gold and purple. They also had special fireworks that would burst the colors of the French flag.

In the finale they lit up the tower against the spray of rocketing colors.

On the way back, the air was cloudy from the smoke.

  1. Meringue cake looked so delish. And on your last post, seeing all that lovely food at the market, I decided all I really wanted is a doughnut. So go ahead and bring me one back please Maggie!!!
